ARS Electronica 2020 – STARTS methodologies round table

[nectar_dropcap color=””]A[/nectar_dropcap]s part of ARS Electronica 2020 festival, Wolverhampton Garden hosts an event organised by Reader in Digital Media Dr Denise Doyle from the Faculty of Arts, Business and Social Sciences at the University of Wolverhampton.

The Identifying Successful STARTS Methodologies research project has worked in collaboration with the STARTS Prize and Ars Electronica. The afternoon of STARTS (Science + Technology + ARTS) begins at 1pm UK time (2pm Austrian time) with an introduction to the project and includes an artist-scientist roundtable; with speakers from the BeAnotherLab Art Collective, artist Pei-Ying Lin, designer Giulia Tomasello, and scientists Dr Miranda de Graaf and Tommaso Busolo.

There will also be work from designer Jen Keane from her This is Grown project. Dr Martin Khechara from the Faculty of Science and Engineering and Dr Richard Glover from the School of Performing Arts will be facilitating the event.

At 2.15pm UK time (3.15pm Austrian time) there will be a STARTS Exhibition Tour at KEPLER GARDENS, Linz, Austria. This will be streamed by Ars Electronica. Please note the time differences when planning your viewing.

Following these events at 4.30pm UK time (5.30pm Austrian time) we will be live streaming the video journeys of Pei-Ying Lin, Giulia Tomasello and BeAnotherLab Art Collective; introduced by Dr Denise Doyle.

Dr. Denise Doyle. With a background in Arts and Technology Dr Denise Doyle is a Reader in Digital Media at the University of Wolverhampton, Adjunct Professor for Digital Futures at Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU), Toronto, Canada and Principle Editor of the Journal of Virtual Creativity (formally Metaverse Creativity), Intellect, UK. She is currently Project Lead for Investigating Successful STARTS Methodologies (2019-21). She edited the artist-led book New Opportunities for Artistic Practice in Virtual Worlds (2015).

Giulia Tomasello is a designer committed to women’s healthcare and its innovation, combining biotechnology and interactive wearables. Winner of Re-FREAM, STARTS Prize and WORTH Partnership, awarded from EU Horizon 2020, for her projects Alma, Future Flora and Rethinking the Bra. Giulia offers a new deeper knowledge of women’s wellbeing, developing innovative tools in the intersection between medical and social sciences. Coded Bodies is her teaching platform designed to learn basics of soft wearables and an exploration of biological textiles.

Pei-Ying Lin is from Taiwan and based in the Netherlands. She focuses on exploring science and human society through artistic methods, and she is particularly interested in building a common discussion ground for different cultural perspectives regarding elements that constructs our individual perception of the world. Recently she has been focusing on manipulating the boundary of invisible/visible, living/non-living and finding ways to build tools and methods that facilitate such explorations.

BeAnotherLab´s participants:

Norma Deseke: PhD candidate in Anthropology at the University of Cambridge and visiting researcher at Stockholm University. Her thesis explores the laboratory practices of creative professionals, predominantly artists and makers as technology designers.

Christian Cherene: Facilitator / Educator / Field-researcher / His independent practice is concerned with emergent critical practices within ‘AI’, futures studies, and community resilience.
