Along with production company Gruppe 5, we created an out-of-body experience for Terra X, a German TV show on public-service television broadcaster ZDF. The two-part documentary “Our Life” explores what we experience before birth and at the moment of death. Using multisensory stimulation and Virtual Reality we teamed up with Dr. Bigna Lenggenhager to create an out-of-body experience for the show’s host, Dr. Kim Mai Thi Nguyen so she could experience first-hand this mysterious phenomenon that is known to happen in near-death experiences.
We used embodiment and filming techniques elaborated over the years with the Library of Ourselves and inspired by neuroscientific research by Dr. Lenggenhager and her peers to induce in Dr. Kim Mai Thi Nguyen the sense of embodiment that would make the sensation of leaving her body even stronger. This entire 5-minute segment of the documentary including the filming and editing of the VR piece was shot in just one day.
We thank the director Luise Wagner and the entire Gruppe 5 team for a fantastic shoot. The show was very-well received, with several million viewers in Germany soon after its launch on February 16th, 2025
